John Edward Greig Cunningham, M.V.O. (1878–1954)
John Edward Greig Cunningham was a senior Royal Navy engineering officer whose career extended from the late Victorian period through the First World War and into the interwar years. Born on 17 December 1878 at Amballa, Punjab, British India, he later combined his naval engineering background with a senior role in civilian industry.
According to the supplied census records, Cunningham was serving as an Assistant Engineer aboard HMS Ocean in 1901. By 1911, he was an Engineer Lieutenant aboard HMS Suffolk.
During the First World War, Cunningham attained the rank of Engineer Lieutenant-Commander. His wartime services were recognised by France with the award of the Chevalier of the Légion d’honneur, announced on 15 September 1916.
Further recognition followed in 1925, when he was appointed a Member, Fourth Class, of the Royal Victorian Order (M.V.O.). The announcement in the London Gazette identified him as an Engineer-Commander and placed the appointment among honours associated with the Prince of Wales’s visit to Africa and South America.
Cunningham subsequently reached flag rank. The supplied 1939 Register transcription describes him as a retired Engineer Rear-Admiral, while the National Portrait Gallery records him as a Vice-Admiral, Engineer. His precise promotion chronology remains to be established.
In the final quarter of 1907, Cunningham married Caroline Ann Brokenshaw in the St Austell registration district of Cornwall. Caroline was born at Fowey on 17 May 1880. The couple had two children recorded in the supplied family history: John George Stuart Cunningham, whose birth was registered in 1908, and Peggy Louisa Cunningham, born on 19 April 1910.
By 1939, Cunningham and his wife were living at Saint Leonards, Warminster Road, in the Bathavon district of Somerset. Alongside his retired naval rank, the register recorded his occupation as managing director of an engineering company manufacturing machinery for the production of explosives. The company’s name is unclear in the available transcription.
Cunningham later lived at 80 Esplanade, Fowey, Cornwall. He died at the Royal Naval Hospital, Plymouth, on 7 March 1954, aged 75. Probate was granted at Bodmin on 29 April 1954 to his widow, Caroline, with his estate valued at £8,401 15s. 1d. Caroline died at Fowey on 5 July 1963, aged 83.
